Tonight's (8/30/11) homework is to answer problem number 1.35 on p.83.

The random numbers I chose were 2 4 6 7 8 9 10 and 12. The Q1 is 5 and the Q3 is 9.5. That means that the IQR will be 4.5. Now if i put an extreme value to this data set, like 50, then the Q1 will become 5 and the Q3 will become 11. That will make the new IQR be 6. As you can see by this example, the IQR of the data barely changes when an extreme value is added. That means the IQR is a resistant measure of spread.
